Maharashtra

Govinda sport

Janmaashtami/ Gokulashtami ( Marathi- गोकुळाष्टमी ), popularly known in Mumbai and Pune as Dahi Handi, is celebrated with enormous zeal and enthusiasm. The handi is a clay pot filled with buttermilk that is positioned at a convenient height prior to the event. The topmost person on the human pyramid tries to break the handi by hitting it with a blunt object. When the handi breaks, the buttermilk is spilled over the entire group, symbolizing their achievement through unity. Handis are set up around the city, and groups of youngsters –called Govinda Pathaks – travel around in trucks trying to break as many handis as possible during the day.

Many – such Govinda Pathaks – compete with each other, especially for the handis that dole out hefty rewards. The event, in recent times, has gathered a political flavor, and it is common for political parties and rich community groups to offer prizes amounting to lakhs of rupees.

Some of the most famous handis are at Dadar, Lower Parel, Worli, Mazgaon, Lalbaug, Thane and Babu Genu, Mandai in Pune.

Cash and gifts are offered for Govinda troops to participate; for over 4,000 handis in Mumbai, 2,000 Govinda troops compete for the prizes.

Manipur

Janmaashtami – popularly known in Manipur as Krishna Janma – is a significant festival celebrated at two temples in Imphal, the capital city of Manipur. The first festival is at the Govindaji temple, and the second is at the International Society for Krishna Consciousness temple. Devotees of Lord Krishna gather mostly at the ISKCON temple.

Northern and Eastern India

Places in Uttar Pradesh that are associated with Krishna’s childhood, such as Mathura, Gokul and Vrindavan, attract visitors from all over India, who go there to participate in the festival celebrations.[8] People in the city of Dwarka in Gujarat – where Krishna is believed to have established his Kingdom – celebrate the festival by visiting the Dwarkadhish temple. In Jammu, kite flying is an important part of the celebration on his day.

In the eastern state of Odisha, in the region around Puri and in Nabadwip, West Bengali people celebrate Janmashtami by fasting and worship until midnight. Purana Pravachana from the Bhagavata Purana are recited from the 10th Skandha. This section deals with pastimes of Lord Krishna. The next day is called Nanda Utsav or the joyous celebration of Krishna’s foster parents Nanda and Yashoda. On this day, people break their fast and offer various cooked sweets during the early hours.

South India

In Southern India, floors in houses are decorated with footprints made from flour, to symbolize Krishna’s childhood sport of stealing butter from houses.

Nepal

Eighty percent of the population of Nepal identify themselves as Hindus and celebrate Krishna Janmashtimi. They observe Janmashtami by fasting until midnight. They chant Slokas from the Bhagavad Gita and sing religious songs called bhajans. The temples of Lord Krishna are decorated, and bhajans and kirtans are sung or played. The Krishna Mandir in Patan Durbar Square, Narayanhiti Krishnamandir, and other temples of Lord Krishna are the centers for festivities on Krishna Janmaasthimi. Numerous devotees flock to the ancient Krishna temple in old Patan Durbar Square to keep vigil through the revered night of his birth. Observances include people sitting closely together, bodies rocking as women chant the many names of Lord Krisha, such as Narayan, Narayan and Gopal, Gopal. Some sing hymns, others clap their hands, while some others pray. Crowds of men and women edge their way slowly up narrow steps through the seated devotees to the temple’s dark interior, to where the main idol stands. There they offer flowers, coins and food, and wait for a glimpse of the Krishna Janmashtami idol. After the temple priest gives them prasad, they make their way home.

Bangladesh

Janmashthami is a national holiday in Bangladesh.[11] On Janmashthami, a procession starts from Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka, the National Temple of Bangladesh, and then proceeds through the streets of Old Dhaka. The procession dates back to 1902, but was stopped in 1948 following the establishment of Pakistan and subsequent attacks by Muslim mobs in Dhaka. The procession was resumed in 1989.

Pakistan

Janmashthami is celebrated by Pakistani Hindus in the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Karachi with the singing of bhajans and delivering of sermons on Krishna.

Outside South Asia

The first ever elected government official in the world to issue proclamation for the celebration Janmashtami is Janet Napolitano, while she was the Governor of Arizona. The festival is also celebrated widely by Hindus in Caribbean in the countries of Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and the Dutch Colony of Surinam. The Hindus in these countries origianted from Uttar Pradesh and are the descendants of indentured immigrants from UP.

Street plays

For the past few years, several thousand teams of youth perform street plays on the occasion of Janmashtami worldwide. The performers of these plays are inspired by Pandurang Shastri Athavale, of the Swadhyay Pariwar, to spread the message of Krishna. They disseminate the thoughts of Bhagavad Gita through street plays around the week of Janmashtami.

Truss Times‘s insight:

Ankita is not my first girlfriend: Sushant Singh Rajput.

Sushant Singh Rajput tells us how he worked his charm on his ladylove and also on his parents:

What was your parents’ reaction when they heard that you are giving up engineering for acting?

They were shocked. I come from a family of doctors and engineers and everyone expected me to take up a similar career. That was the most natural thing to do! I remember when the results of the All India Engineering exams came out. I ranked 7th. I even got a scholarship. But it was during the sixth semester of my engineering course that I decided to call it quits and pursue acting seriously. When I told my parents about my decision, they were aghast and could not say anything. And I took their silence as a nod of approval (Laughs).

What was your favourite hangout in those days?

Along with some of my college friends, I would often bunk classes and drive to Murthal, which is about 50 km from New Delhi, just to have some piping hot parathas. There was this small roadside dhaba where they would serve absolutely delicious aloo parathas with dollops of butter.

Were you Mr Popular?

On the contrary, I was a loner. I could hardly make friends. But, I am still in touch with the few friends I made in school and college.

What about girlfriends?

I would be lying if I say Ankita is my first girlfriend. But, she is my first serious relationship.

How did you impress Ankita?

Oh that was hard work! I tried all the tricks I picked up from watching those romantic Shah Rukh Khan movies. But she could see through all my ploys. She hated me initially. But, finally she gave in and said yes. When you are spending 16 to 17 hours with a person who is persistently trying to woo you, you really don’t have much choice!

Ranbir, Katrina in ‘Jagga Jasoos’.

Anurag Basu’s next, post his superhit Barfi, is a family entertainer titled Jagga Jasoos.

We have learnt that after much speculation, Katrina Kaif will play the leading lady opposite the charming Ranbir Kapoor.

While the film was originally to be shot in 2014, our sources tell us that all efforts are being made to start shooting the film this year itself to ensure that it releases next year.

We had already reported earlier that Ranbir and Anurag are partners on this one.

The trade is excited about Ranbir and Kat teaming up for the third time, especially because their earlier two film outings — Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and Raajneeti — were both well received at the box office.

HOW TO LIVING A TENSION FREE LIFE?

Is it really possible to live a life without crushing tension or stress in modern world? It is true that stress is a natural phenomenon given to us by the nature to deal with day to day problems or emergency. Stress spurs a man to action. There are other simple methods to reduce tension. Fortunately the best treatment is easy and it costs nothing. And the best of the benefits is that you don’t get any side-effects.

Here are some tips:

Talk to people in your family

You may not be talking to your loved ones, or maybe no one’s starting any conversation. The easiest way to start a conversation is to tell them what you’ve done through the day, and ask them what had chanced with them.

Listen to music

Music has got a lot of power to relieve your mind. I am a musician and play many instruments. Music has the power to change the pattern of impulses in your brain. Avoid soft music to relieve you. This is a rubbish convection. It has been scientifically proven that soft or sad music can make you even more Unhappy. My advice is that you buy an iPod and listen to all the stuff that you prefer.

Think Positive

Dont even remember all the negatives that had chanced on you through the day. You must think about what’s to be done, rather than what’s happened to you. Think of your future instead.

Share your secrets with someone.

If you have trouble doing this, surround yourself with kind, loving friends and see how they talk to you. Be sure that you talk to them the same way. Eventually, you learn to be just as kind to yourself as your supportive friends are.

Take it Easy

It is true that you can’t do without work. We must work very hard to achieve. It is good for health and mind. But once a day at least for one hour it is useful to forget work and do the things which relax you.

Simplify Your Life

A man makes his life complicated himself and gets in the grip of Tension wave. Too many expectations, too many aims, too many friends to appease, too many love affairs to handle – bothering you from all the sides the whole day and the whole month. Simplify your life – have only one love affair or wife, have a few good friends, have one or two aims in life. You can’t handle everything efficiently. After all you are a human being.

Truss Times‘s insight:

Stop Back Pain Before It Starts.

You don’t have back pain…yet. Want to keep it that way? Try these techniques to prevent the pain long before it’s begins.

Sit pretty

You don’t need a fancy ergonomically designed office chair, but you should have one that provides good support so that your back is curved like an S, not a C, says Jeffrey Goldstein, MD, director of the spine service at the New York University Langone Medical Center.

Every half hour, get up and walk around for a few seconds to take some of the stress off your back.

Stand tall

Imagine a line coming down through your body from the ceiling, says physical therapist René Garrison.

Your ears, shoulders, hips, and knees should all stack up along that line, with your head stacked directly atop your neck, not jutting forward.

Wear soft soles

"If your shoe has little cushioning, every time your foot strikes concrete, you’ll jar the bones and muscles in your low back," says Raj Rao, MD, vice chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin. (That holds true for flats as well as heels.)

Look for a shoe with a cushioned sole, or buy an insert like Spenco For Her Women’s Q-Factor Cushioning Insole ($17; amazon.com). When you’re at home, pad around in thick flip-flops or well-cushioned sneakers.

Don’t smoke

A 2010 review of 40 studies found that smokers have more low back pain than nonsmokers, possibly because smoking reduces blood flow to the spine, says Dr. Rao.

Learn how to lift

You know to hoist heavy objects using your legs, not your back. But what about a very light object?

Answer: Lean over it, slightly bend one knee, and extend the other leg behind you. Hold onto a chair or table for support.

Downsize your pillows

"Sleeping with two or three pillows under your neck can strain your muscles," says Jessica Shellock, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon at the Texas Back Institute.

CAN YOU REALLY THROW YOUR BACK OUT?

Just the other day, a patient said, “I was working in the garden and I threw my back out.” Then she asked, “When you throw your back out, what exactly is going out and where does it go? And how do you get it back in?” These were good questions and ones for which I did not have ready answers.

The fact is, you cannot actually throw your back out — it’s a figure of speech, or, if taken literally, a myth. However, the experience of sudden, severe back pain is no myth to the person suffering through it. And it can certainly feel as though some major structures in the back have moved, or that to feel better something must be returned to its original location. If one could see inside the painful back — and increasingly, we can, with imaging tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized tomography (CT) — one will commonly see normal anatomy or mild abnormalities that have nothing to do with the pain, even in the face of excruciating symptoms.

Throwing Your Back Out: Still a Mystery

When people say they have thrown their back out, what they usually mean is that while performing a specific movement (such as twisting or bending forward) they have developed sudden and severe pain. The low back is the most common site for pain of this sort, and while there are several causes of this problem, including muscle spasm, arthritis, and, less commonly, a “slipped” or ruptured disc or even a fracture, the cause is often mysterious.

Many people assume that a “thrown” back is due to disc herniation (or disc bulge or rupture), meaning that a disc has stretched or “slipped” out of place and is pressing on a nerve. (That may be where the notion of “thrown out” comes from.) But more often than not, a disc cannot be blamed for back pain. Even rarer causes of severe back pain are infections or tumors; fortunately, of all back pain, these represent less than 1 percent of cases. In the absence of obvious injury (such as a motor vehicle accident), a sudden “movement” of the bones of the spine is not a typical cause of sudden back pain. Despite everything that’s known about back pain, we still don’t know why most back pain occurs; we simply do not understand it well enough to identify the cause in most cases.

Treating the “Thrown Back”

For many people with back pain, the name of the condition is much less important than what can be done to reduce pain. Even though the diagnosis can sometimes direct the choice of treatment, for most of the common causes of back pain, treatments are similar. Here are some of the most popular options:

Physical therapy — This may include a program of stretching and exercises, advice about posture and how to safely lift objects.Over-the-counter or prescription medications — Pain relievers, anti-inflammatory agents and muscle relaxants are among the most effective and often will be needed only for a short time.Chiropractic care — Some people experience more rapid pain relief with chiropractic therapy.Complementary and alternative therapies — Treatments such as acupuncture and massage may be helpful, although most of them are unproven remedies.Injections and surgery — If sudden and severe pain does turn out to be due to a ruptured (or herniated) disc and other treatment options prove ineffective, an injection of corticosteroids with a long-acting anesthetic agent may be warranted, as may be surgery.

Specific recommendations will depend on your individual situation. Talk with your health care professional for advice about evaluation and treatment.

How To Prevent More Back Trouble

There are a number of reasonable ways to reduce the risk of recurrent back pain, including:

Lose excess weight.Wear comfortable, well-cushioned shoes with low heels.Go easy on your back — when you need to move a heavy object, get help, divide the package up, or use a dolly rather than doing it on your own.Adjust your computer terminal and work station or have an “ergonomic evaluation” by your employer to see whether your work environment contributed to your back pain.Stretch and exercise regularly.Talk to your doctor about taking extra calcium, vitamin D and a weight-bearing-exercise program to reduce your risk of osteoporosis and fracture. Additional bone-building drugs also may be recommended.

The Bottom Line

Sometimes a phrase used to describe an experience or a condition takes on importance and meaning beyond what it truly deserves. The concept of “throwing your back out” is one such a phrase. It suggests a structural problem in the back that is not present in most cases. Rather than illuminating the condition, the term misleads and should probably be abandoned. Don’t be surprised if your doctor uses different terms to describe your back condition than you do, or if different doctors use different terms (such as strain, muscle spasm, ligament injury or degenerative disc disease), because the difficult truth is that most back pain is difficult to name.

Karnataka high court stays proceedings against Vijay Mallya and Kingfisher Airlines.

BANGALORE: The Karnataka high court has stayed for eight weeks further proceedings against Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) and its chairman Vijay Mallya before the special court for economic offences, Bangalore in relation to three complaints filed by the Income Tax department for not remitting the amount under tax deducted at source (TDS) for the financial years 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12.

Justice KN Keshvananarayana passed this interim order following a petition filed by KFA and Mallya. The judge also ordered a notice to the Income Tax department in this regard.

The petitioners claimed that proceedings pertaining to the issue are pending before the high court as well as Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) and the authorities failed to consider the same before filing/registering complaint. They further claimed that the requirements under the Income Tax Act have not been complied with as notices have preceded the alleged authorization to the commissioner and the same is without jurisdiction.

According to them, it is only the chief commissioner of Income Tax or the director general Income Tax who have the said jurisdiction.

The BFAL contends that it is running under loss and salaries to employees have been paid from borrowed money and TDS was not deducted.

The Income tax (I-T) department had filed these complaints under section 276B of the Income Tax Act, 1961 against KFA and Mallya.

KFA is facing a total TDS demand for Rs 401 crore.
