देश के सबसे बड़े बिजनेस ग्रुप टाटा संस, अनिल अंबानी और कुमार मंगलमबिड़ला की इकाइयां उन 26 कंपनियों में शुमार हैं, जिन्होंने बैंक खोलने के लाइसेंसके लिए आवेदन किया है।
अंबानी की रिलायंस कैपिटल ने जापान की सबसे बड़ी बीमा कंपनी निपॉन लाइफइंश्योरेंस और सुमितोमो मित्सुई ट्रस्ट होल्डिंग्स के साथ मिलकर आवेदन किया है।
इसके अलावा सिटीग्रुप के पूर्व चीफ एग्जिक्यूटिव विक्रम पंडित ने जेएम फाइनेंशियल से हाथ मिलायाहै।
बैंकिंग लाइसेंस के आवेदन मिलने के बाद वित्त मंत्री पी चिदंबरम ने कहा है कि कितनी इकाइयों को बैंकखोलने की इजाजत दी जाएगी, इसके लिए कोई सीमा तय नहीं की गई है।
उन्होंने एक साक्षात्कार में कहा, ‘मुझे नहीं लगता कि संख्या को लेकर कोई सीमा तय की गई है। मेरेदिमाग में कोई संख्या नहीं है। यह इस बात पर निर्भर करता है कि कितने आवेदनकर्ता लाइसेंस के योग्यहैं। कोई आवेदन करता है, इसका यह मतलब नहीं कि वह योग्य आवेदनकर्ता है।’
चिदंबरम ने कहा, ‘अगर आवेदन करने वालों में कम ही लाइसेंस के योग्य हैं, तो लाइसेंस भी कम दिएजाएंगे। मुझे नहीं लगता कि गवर्नर के दिमाग में कोई सीमा तय है।’
यह पूछने पर कि क्या भारत को बड़े बैंकों की जरूरत है या बड़ी संख्या में बैंकों की जरूरत है, तो वित्त मंत्रीने कहा कि दोनों बातों के लिए गुंजाइश है।

चांदी के भाव 200 रुपये की तेजी के साथ 41, 200 रुपये प्रति किलोग्राम पर रहे।लंदन से मिली जानकारी के अनुसार अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर कारोबार के दौरान सोना 0.8 प्रतिशत बढ़कर1243.21 डॉलर प्रति औंस पर रहा।
चांदी 0.7 फीसदी चढ़कर 19.74 डॉलर प्रति औंस पर रही। घरेलू बाजार में अठग्रामी गिन्नी के भाव 200रुपये की तेजी के साथ 23,800 रुपये पर रहे।
चांदी सिक्के में हजार रुपये की बढ़त रही और भाव 78,000 रुपये प्रति सैकड़ा लिवाली व 79,000 रुपयेप्रति सैकड़ा बिकवाली रहे।

महिंद्रा ने अपने टू व्हीलर वाहनों की रेंज का विस्तार करते हुए 110 सीसी सेंटूरोकी नई मोटरसाइकिल लांच की है। सेंटूरो की दिल्ली में एक्स शोरूम कीमत 45हजार रुपये रखी गई है।
पहली 10 हजार बुकिंग पर कंपनी ने ग्राहकों को एक हजार रुपये की छूट का ऑफरभी दिया है। इसके साथ ही कंपनी ने अगले दो-ढाई वर्ष में 10 नए मॉडल बाजार में उतारने की घोषणा कीहै।
रिमोट की और एंटी थैफ्ट अलार्म जैसे आधुनिक फीचर्स के साथ पेश की गई इस बाइक को कंपनी ने पूरीतरह से अपने पुणे स्थित रिसर्च एंड डिजाइनिंग (आरएंडडी) सेंटर में विकसित किया है।
कंपनी ने बाइक का माइलेज 85 किलोमीटर प्रति लीटर होने का दावा किया है। ग्राहकों को सेंटूरो पर 5वर्ष या 70 हजार किलोमीटर की वारंटी भी उपलब्ध कराई गई है, जो अपनी तरह की पहली पेशकश है।
कंपनी के अध्यक्ष अनूप माथुर ने सेंटूरो को लांच करते हुए कहा कि अगले ढाई वर्ष तक हर तीसरे माह एकमॉडल उतारा जाएगा। यह नए मॉडल स्कूटर व बाइक के हर सेग्मेंट में होंगे।

They look clever, but not all shoppers like the price tag
Japan has again shown off one of its greatest innovations – square watermelons.
For years consumers struggled to fit the large round fruit in their refrigerators.

And then there was the problem of trying to cut the fruit when it kept rolling around.
But 20 years ago a forward-thinking farmer on Japan’s south-western island of Shikoku solved the problem.
The farmer, from Zentsuji in Kagawa prefecture, came up with the idea of making a cube-shaped watermelon which could easily be packed and stored.
Fashion food
To make it happen, farmers grew the melons in glass boxes and the fruit then naturally assumed the same shape. Today the cuboid watermelons are hand-picked and shipped all over Japan.
But the fruit, on sale in a selection of department stores and upmarket supermarkets, appeals mainly to the wealthy and fashion-conscious of Tokyo and Osaka, Japan’s two major cities.
Each melon sells for 10,000 yen, equivalent to about $83. It is almost double, or even triple, that of a normal watermelon.
“I can’t buy it, it is too expensive,” said a woman browsing at a department store in the southern city of Takamatsu.
They get square watermelons by growing them inside of square glass cases. That way they can fit easily into an overcrowded refrigerator, and you can stack things on them.
Square watermelons are expensive though (10,000 yen or about $82). Compare that to regular round watermelons which cost about $15-20 in Japan.
The square boxes they’re grown in are the exact dimensions of Japanese refrigerators, which means they fit perfectly. At $82 each, these square watermelons probably wouldn’t be too popular in the United States. Our solution for a lack of refrigerator space? Smaller, seedless watermelons.

Researchers have claimed that women who had worked in nights shifts for 30 or more years are twice as likely to suffer from breast cancer.
In the study, they assessed whether night shifts were linked to an increased risk of breast cancer among 1134 women with breast cancer and 1179 women without the disease, but of the same age, in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Kingston, Ontario.
The women, who had done various different jobs, were asked about their shift work patterns over their entire work history; hospital records were used to determine tumour type.
Around one in three women in both groups had worked night shifts. There was no evidence that those who had worked nights for up to 14 years or between 15 and 29 years had any increased risk of developing breast cancer.
But those who had worked nights for 30 or more years were twice as likely to have developed the disease, after taking account of potentially influential factors, however, the numbers in this group were comparatively small.
The authors said that the suggested link between breast cancer and shift work has been put down to melatonin, but sleep disturbances, upset body rhythms, vitamin D or lifestyle differences could also play their part.

The Indian government is pushing ahead with plans for a new and improved low-cost Aakash tablet for students which it hopes will reinvigorate a project hit by countless delays.
The technical specs of the proposed Android-based Aakash IV have been posted to the web sites of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) to allow stakeholders to comment.
The seven incher should be no more than 500g in weight and 0.75in thick, with a minimum of 1 GB DDR3 SDRAM, alongside at least 4GB internal storage which can be expanded by up to 32GB with an SD card, according to the proposals.
Battery capacity should be enough for at least three hours of 720p video playback and five hours of web browsing.
The government wants to stick with “the latest Android stable version” but said the tablet needs to be dual bootable through an external SD card to also offer the latest version of Ubuntu.
Browser-wise it needs HTML5 support and the default language of the device will be set to English, although support for multiple Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil and Punjabi is a must.
As a learning tool for students, there is also a strict requirement for USB, mouse, keyboard, and “all popular” 2G, 3G and 4G data dongles to be supported.
In a blow to UK firm Datawind, which produced the first two iterations of the Aakash, the government said it hadn’t decided who would be awarded the lucrative contract this time around.
The firm may well be fearing the worst, given that the project has been plagued by problems up to this point.
The first version of the tablet, launched in October 2011, was roundly slated, mainly because of its poor resistive touchscreen.
Things got even worse when Datawind had a falling out with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur and IIT Rajasthan – organisations leading the project at a regional level – which ended up delaying shipments.
The project seemingly got back on track last year after Datawind launched the Aakash 2 – a slightly higher spec’d version with an improved (capacitive) touchscreen.
There have still been grumbles, however, that despite the extremely low cost – just Rs 1,130 ($US24.65) to students – the device simply isn’t good enough.
Further shipping delays have imperilled the project again, so the Aakash IV may be the government’s last chance to get things right and finally put a tablet in the hands of millions of students in 25,000 colleges and 400 universities across the sub-continent.
